Marianus & Elizabeth Cuming
It all started with the emigration of Marianus Cuming (1813-1859) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Thom) (1815-1865) and their family in the 1850s to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada.
Although never a driving force like his eldest child, James, Marianus was obviously a man of great ability and many parts.
A farmer in Scotland, he earned a degree in veterinary science at Edinburgh, which eventually led him to emigrate to Canada to take up a post at St. John.
At the same time, he managed to become an inventor of agricultural equipment of some note (for no personal reward), a science writer of some standing in Canada and the United States, and the ‘Solomon’ of his local community.
A dreamer, a progressive thinker, and perhaps a man before his time, Marianus died prematurely at 46 in New Brunswick, Canada; he was a much-loved and respected man.
