Gathering of the Australian Descendants of Marianus & Elizabeth Cuming held at "Coldstream Hill", Lilydale, Victoria – home of Shirley (Cuming) & Keith Gardner on 6th March 1955.
Inspired by the autobiography of James Cuming (1835-1911), compiled by him in his closing years and failing eyesight, his descendants joined in a Cuming Clan Ceilidh in 1955, at "Coldstream Hill", the home of Shirley (nee Cuming) (1887-1956) and Keith Gardner, at Lilydale in Victoria on 6th March, 1955. As a result of the generosity, initiative and energy of Grace (1882 -1961), wife of Sir Alex Stewart (1876 -1956) and youngest of the nine children of James and Elizabeth Cuming, a family tree was prepared, printed and presented by her "With my love and Best Wishes" at Xmas, 1956 to all members of the Clan in Australia.
The initial family tree commences with Marianus Cuming (1813-1859) and his wife Elizabeth, nee Thom (d.1866), and of whose family of 11 James (1835-1911) was the eldest, born in Scotland. In coming to Australia from Portland, Maine, USA in 1862 to settle, he brought with him a young brother George (1850-1889).
